On Mark Twain and Cats…

Mark Twain was undoubtedly one of the 19th Century America’s most beloved writers and humorists. Indeed his works are still loved by people all over the world today. His quick wit & humor still ressonate as fresh and funny in the 21st century as it did over a hundred years ago. He was also a great lover of cats and you can find many funny quotes from him regarding the nature and character of cats. He also had many cats that lived with him through the years in his home in Hartford Conn. I had the pleasure of visiting his home and museum in Hartford back in 2005 and learned alot about his love for cats.
He had a very dry wit and enjoyed naming his cats with dark evil names such as: Satan, Pestilence, Plague, and Lucifer. He also enjoyed making up stories for his children about “The Cat in the Cuff” A painting that hung in the house. The painting still hangs in the house today, and I’ve included a picture of it below. The other extremely funny thing that I found in the museum was a sort of daytimer that he invented to help him remember appointments, events, etc. The page that they had on display in his own handwriting something like: “Forget about the cat, remember the whiskey.”

Here are some of the Cats that resided at the Hartford home

“That cat will write her autograph all over your let if you let her”
